Introduction

The Dumfries and Galloway Courier was established in Dumfries in 1809 and was published continuously on a weekly basis from that time forward. In 1884 it was amalgamated with The Dumfriesshire and Galloway Herald and Register which had itself been founded in 1835 as The Dumfriesshire and Galloway Herald and Advertiser. All birth, marriage and death records as well as obituaries have been transcribed for the relevant years. Although the period covered by the Courier overlaps that of The Dumfries Weekly Journal, the notices printed in these papers were often quite different, and a search for names in both newspapers is recommended in order to determine whether specific events have been recorded. Almost every issue of the Dumfries and Galloway Courier for the period transcribed has survived.

The announcements from the Dumfries and Galloway Courier tended to be less sensationalistic than those in The Dumfries Weekly Journal and therefore the information from these announcements can often be of greater interest to local or family history researchers.
